Newport is advancing its role as steward of the Purple People Bridge by entering into a short-term rental agreement to maintain the emergency shoring system, while planning a permanent repair.
The city is working with LRT Restoration Technologies, LLC, to rent and inspect the emergency support system that stabilizes a failed masonry pier on the bridge. Newport officially became the bridge's owner in September and now manages the shoring agreement directly.
“This is shoring that was put up last year by the Purple People Bridge Company,” said Newport Assistant Manager Brian Steffen. “We’ve since inherited that shoring expense while we seek out permanent repairs for the bridge.”
In 2024, LRT Restoration Technologies installed the emergency shoring tower after detecting serious structural issues in one of the bridge’s masonry piers.
The city emphasizes the tower’s ongoing importance not only for temporary stabilization but also as part of a planned lifting system to realign and repair the damaged section during restoration.
Newport said the commission's action guarantees continued safety and structural stability as design and funding for a permanent fix progress.
Newport maintains critical emergency support on the Purple People Bridge while advancing plans for a lasting restoration solution.
