The longstanding Fraser River crossing between Surrey and New Westminster is approaching completion after several years of delays. Provincial officials now aim to open the replacement bridge by late 2025, nearly two years later than initially planned.
The new bridge will be a four-lane cable-stayed structure, replacing the original 1937 truss bridge. This corridor is one of the busiest commuter routes in the region, making the project crucial for local connectivity.
Construction was originally scheduled to begin in spring 2020 with completion in 2023. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions, especially affecting steel and cable availability, delayed procurement and pushed the timeline back by almost two years.
When ENR last reported on the project in early 2020, work was set to begin that spring with completion expected by 2023.
This new bridge will significantly improve traffic flow and safety on one of the Fraser Valley’s key commuting routes.
Author’s summary: The Pattullo Bridge replacement, delayed by pandemic-related supply issues, is now set to open in late 2025, offering an upgraded crossing connecting Surrey and New Westminster.
