Environment Canada Forecasts First Snowfall of the Season for the GTA

The Greater Toronto Area is preparing for its first snowfall of the season as Environment Canada predicts flurries beginning Sunday and lasting into early next week. A low-pressure system crossing southern Ontario could bring rain and wet snow to the GTA on Sunday, November 9, signaling the city’s initial encounter with winter weather.

While much of Toronto is expected to see a mix of rain and snow, northern areas—especially near Lake Simcoe and elevated regions—may experience steady snowfall.

“Sunday is looking like the most likely timeframe, and with that, we’re expecting there to be some snow through the GTA,” said Steven Flisfeder, meteorologist with Environment Canada. “The northern portions of the GTA are most likely to see it as purely snow… closer to the lake, it’s probably going to be a mix of rain and snow.”

For most of the city, this early snowfall is expected to melt quickly. Temperatures will remain above freezing in the days leading up to Sunday, with daytime highs around 10°C, keeping ground temperatures too warm for lasting accumulation.

“It’s unlikely that the ground level temperatures will be cool enough for any snow to remain at the surface for Toronto,” Flisfeder noted. “As you get further north through the GTA, especially the higher elevations, that will mean the difference between snow sticking to the ground or not.”

Author’s Summary

Environment Canada forecasts that some areas of the GTA may see their first measurable snowfall on November 9, though most of the city will experience only brief flurries due to warm ground temperatures.
