UNISON Celebrates Major Victory Against Outsourcing

UNISON General Secretary Christina McAnea welcomed members from the south west to celebrate a major campaigning victory against outsourcing.

Members from Dorset, working across three NHS trusts, prevented the introduction of a subco that would have affected 1,700 facilities staff, including porters, caterers, and housekeepers, by moving them out of direct NHS employment and altering their terms and conditions, including pensions.

“Every time we’ve seen a subco, we’ve launched a campaign against it – and this was no different,”

said Christina McAnea, who has led national opposition to subcos since 2017. She praised the campaign, stating:

“Dorset’s victory is a brilliant example of how organising works”
.

This win is a significant achievement for NHS facilities staff, demonstrating the power of organising and collective action.
