This Friday marked the deadline for NBA teams to pick up team options on rookie contracts. The Houston Rockets have decided to exercise the options for two key guards: third-year Amen Thompson and second-year Reed Sheppard, as reported by Danielle Lerner of The Houston Chronicle.
By picking up these options, both players are retained by the Rockets through the 2026-2027 NBA season unless traded. Sheppard, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, will earn $11.1 million in his option year. Thompson, selected fourth overall in 2023, will make $12.3 million during his option year.
"Although Houston picked up Thompson’s team option, he will still be looking for a long-term extension in the offseason."
This strategy mirrors the Rockets' previous approach with Jabari Smith Jr., whose team option was exercised before he signed an extension last offseason.
With point guard Fred VanVleet sidelined, Thompson and Sheppard have stepped up significantly this season. Thompson has started every game as Houston's point guard, averaging 33.5 minutes, 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.5 turnovers per game. Sheppard contributes 22.5 minutes, 10 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 turnovers on average.
Author’s summary: The Rockets secure key young talents Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard by exercising their team options, ensuring stability in the guard rotation as they gear for a competitive future season.
