Qatar Launch Mega-Money Move to Host World Club Challenge

Organisers of the World Club Challenge received a seven-figure offer from Qatar to host the prestigious match between the Super League and NRL champions. Despite the substantial proposal and the country's strong interest in securing the event, Hull KR and the Brisbane Broncos have declined the offer.

The clubs chose to keep the fixture in the United Kingdom, with Hull expected to host the game next year. This follows the strong UK interest and crowd turnout during Wigan’s 2024 victory over the Penrith Panthers.

Venue Considerations

Hull KR are eager to stage the match in their home city, exploring alternative venues such as Leeds United’s Elland Road. However, the preferred location appears to be the MKM Stadium, home ground of rivals Hull FC.

Paul Lakin, Hull KR CEO, acknowledged that “following our Grand Final success, we considered moving the World Club Challenge to the MKM Stadium.”

Preparations for the event are nearly complete, and organisers are confident the fixture will proceed as planned. The main scheduling challenge lies in fitting the match midweek, as Hull City have a home game on Saturday and the Robins are due to fly to Las Vegas on Sunday for their next fixture against Leeds Rhinos at Allegiant Stadium.

Author’s Summary

Qatar’s bid to host the World Club Challenge was declined as Hull KR and Brisbane Broncos confirmed the 2025 match will remain in the UK, likely held at Hull’s MKM Stadium.
