The Georgia Southern football team enters the week with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-3 mark in Sun Belt play. After a 34-24 loss to Arkansas State, the Eagles will face Appalachian State (4-4, 1-3) in Boone, North Carolina, during a Thursday night matchup.
This traditional rivalry between the Eagles and Mountaineers comes at a crucial time, as Georgia Southern needs to win three of its remaining four games to qualify for a bowl game.
“I know that Eagle Nation is disappointed and angry,” Helton said. “Any time you lose two hard-fought games that take you out of contention for a conference title, that is not who we are and that is not our standard at Georgia Southern. It is not acceptable and it never will be. To Eagle Nation, I say I am sorry. It is my job to make sure that doesn’t happen and I own that.”
Helton emphasized his commitment to improvement, both immediately and in the long term, noting he will evaluate the program with Athletic Director Chris Davis and President Kyle Marrero once the season concludes.
Georgia Southern aims to rebound after consecutive losses as Coach Helton acknowledges fan frustration and vows to restore the team’s competitive standard.
