Aimee Lou Wood has opened up about how she found her voice after criticizing a harsh and unfunny 'Saturday Night Live' impression. She discussed a moment on the set of Anxious People, directed by Marc Forster and co-starring Angelina Jolie.
While filming an emotional scene, Wood became anxious due to yelling crew members giving multiple directions. She asked for clear guidance: one direction from a single voice, without distracting hand gestures in her line of sight. She reflected on her growth:
“I’ve spent years feeling unable to say anything like that for fear of seeming argumentative – but now I feel like I can take ownership of what I need to thrive, and tell people what won’t work for me.”
Wood noticed Jolie’s silent encouragement, describing:
“When I spoke up, all I could see was Angelina giving me a thumbs up. She’s possibly the most famous woman ever, but she’s so normal.”
Wood also connected this experience to her previous intervention during an April 'Saturday Night Live' sketch. The parody of White Lotus Season 3, set in Thailand, mocked her character Chelsea, with Sarah Sherman exaggerating Wood’s buck teeth.
Wood expressed exhaustion over frequently discussing her teeth and viewed speaking out as “breaking a pattern” of not standing up to childhood bullies.
Author's summary: Aimee Lou Wood found empowerment through setting boundaries on set, supported by Angelina Jolie, and by confronting past insecurities publicly and privately to grow her confidence.
