The Orioles are set to add free agent outfielder Leody Taveras, pending a physical, according to Mike Rodriguez. The team has not yet made an official announcement.
Seattle designated Taveras for assignment in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had claimed him off waivers from Texas in early May. A few weeks ago, Taveras chose free agency.
Taveras spent five seasons with the Rangers, debuting in 2020 in a part-time role. Early in his career, he struggled offensively but provided excellent center field defense and speed on the bases. His playing time increased significantly over the years:
His strong 2023 performance earned him a larger role in 2024, despite a decline at the plate. In 2024, Taveras posted an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances, hit .229, and stole a career-high 23 bases.
Before the 2024 season, Taveras qualified for arbitration due to his Super Two status. He and the Rangers agreed to a $4.75 million contract for 2025. However, luxury tax concerns sparked trade rumors. Despite this, Texas kept him, although his offensive struggles continued.
"He slashed .241/.259/."
Author's summary: Leody Taveras, known for his defensive skills and speed, is joining the Orioles after mixed offensive results and a recent free agency decision.
