Before Monday’s matchup with Pittsburgh, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube spoke about several team updates, including the Cowan–Tavares–Nylander line, Chris Tanev’s condition, and David Kampf’s decision to step away from the Marlies. He also mentioned Bobby McMann’s limited participation in practice and Sammy Blais’ strong performance in his first two games with the Leafs.
“I didn’t see frustration in camp. He came in, and there was competition. We have a lot of players and must make decisions. His going to the minors was part of that, but he didn’t feel like staying there — that’s his decision to make. It’s up to him and Brad (Treliving) to work it out.”
Berube commented that Kampf’s time in the minors was not due to frustration but rather the team’s depth and necessary roster choices. Kampf’s next steps will depend on his discussions with management.
“Cowan handled the puck well through the neutral zone and created plays in the offensive end. He and JT read off each other effectively and generated some good scoring opportunities.”
Berube expressed optimism about the chemistry between Easton Cowan and John Tavares, adding that William Nylander’s inclusion would likely enhance the line’s offensive dynamics.
Craig Berube emphasized team depth, noted David Kampf’s personal decision regarding the Marlies, and praised the developing connection between Cowan and Tavares.
