Switzerland says conditions remain unmet for recognizing Palestine

Switzerland’s Position on Recognizing Palestine

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter stated on Monday that the conditions for officially recognizing Palestine are still unmet. She emphasized the necessity of a permanent ceasefire and a stable government before such a step can be taken.

Conditions for Recognition

In a press conference with the Foreign Press Association in Bern, Keller-Sutter responded to a question from Anadolu, explaining that certain prerequisites must be fulfilled. These include the return of all hostages, recovery of the deceased, and the establishment of a lasting ceasefire along with a clear peace plan.

"We feel that there are some conditions that have to be fulfilled, like all the hostages must return home, and also the dead bodies. There must be a permanent ceasefire, there must be a plan for peace."

She added that recognition could happen in the future once these conditions are met and a stable government with elections is in place.

Switzerland’s View on the Gaza Conflict

Regarding whether the situation in Gaza meets the criteria for genocide, Keller-Sutter said Switzerland condemns all breaches of international law. The country criticized both Israel's disproportionate military actions and Hamas's terrorist attacks.

"Switzerland condemns every violation of international law. So we condemned the disproportionate intervention of Israel, as well as the terrorist attack of Hamas."

She noted that the question of genocide will ultimately be resolved by international courts.

Zurich Canton’s Decision on Gaza Children

When asked about Zurich canton's refusal to admit wounded children from Gaza for medical treatment, Keller-Sutter clarified that such decisions are within the authority of the cantons, not the federal government.

"It's up to cantons to decide."

Summary

Switzerland maintains that formal recognition of Palestine requires conditions like a permanent ceasefire, a stable government, and peace plans, while emphasizing legal processes for addressing the Gaza conflict.
