Following the release of her album Lux, Spanish pop star Rosalía shared her experience of meeting her musical hero, Patti Smith, describing the encounter as “beautiful.”
Rosalía met Smith at the renowned Electric Lady Studios in New York, a moment she cherishes deeply. The meeting was arranged by Lee Foster, the studio's manager, who wanted them to connect. Rosalía recalled to BBC 6 Music host Nick Grimshaw:
“So we met because he wanted us to meet.”
She vividly remembers the moment:
“I remember walking down the stairs. I was wearing this white dress. And I was running, like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to make Patti Smith wait!'”
Upon arriving, Rosalía was struck by Smith’s radiant presence:
“She had so much light in her face, in her eyes, in her smile, and I couldn’t believe it… She just pointed out the dress and said, ‘I love your dress.’ Then she talked to me about the song, and we started sharing. It was one of the most beautiful moments ever to meet her, because I really admire her.”
Rosalía's track “La Yagular” from Lux includes a 1976 Patti Smith recording. In it, Smith says:
“Break on through to the other side. Going through one door isn’t enough, a million doors aren’t enough.”
This collaboration highlights the deep respect and influence Patti Smith has on Rosalía’s artistry.
