Malala Yousafzai recently recounted an unexpected and humorous encounter with Prince Harry that took a slightly awkward turn. Sharing the moment on The Graham Norton Show on October 31, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate described how her mother intervened during a photo session with the Duke of Sussex.
“My mum was also very strict; she wanted me to stick to Pakistani traditional culture,” Malala said. “So when I met Prince Harry, we were taking a photo together and he put his arm around my shoulder and my mum goes up to him and she says, ‘Remove.’ She just, like, shoves off his hand.”
Malala, who was 17 at the time, explained that her mother’s reaction came from deeply rooted cultural values emphasizing modesty and respect. The moment reflected her family's protective traditions rather than any ill will toward the prince.
“Prince Harry was very, very sweet and he put his arm around me… but my mum, because of the culture — it’s a man putting an arm around a girl — she just went up to Prince Harry and said, ‘Remove — no touch.’ I was terrified when that was happening — poor Prince Harry, his face went red,” Malala later told Lorraine Kelly on ITV.
Despite the initial awkwardness, Malala and Prince Harry reconnected years later, in 2020, during a virtual conversation with Meghan Markle on International Day of the Girl, demonstrating mutual respect and warmth.
Malala Yousafzai shared how her mother’s cultural values led to an awkward yet memorable moment with Prince Harry, later turning into a lasting mutual respect between the two.
