Toronto Maple Leafs center David Kampf is currently away from the team as he contemplates his professional future following his start to the season in the AHL. The 30-year-old forward was placed on waivers at the beginning of the season and then assigned to the Toronto Marlies, where he played four games and registered one assist.
“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf,” said TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston. “He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future, what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend.”
Johnston added that a potential resolution between Kampf and the Maple Leafs could arrive soon, with the possibility of him rejoining the Marlies in the near term.
Kampf is in the third season of a four-year contract worth $9.6 million, carrying an average annual value of $2.4 million. Originally an undrafted free agent, he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in May 2017 and played four seasons there before joining Toronto in 2021 on a two-year contract.
Following steady performances in his first two years with the Maple Leafs—posting 26 and 27 points respectively—he earned a four-year extension in June 2023. However, under new head coach Craig Berube, Kampf has struggled through the 2024–25 season, tallying five goals and 13 points in 59 games while averaging a career-low 12 minutes and 24 seconds of ice time.
David Kampf’s uncertain status with the Maple Leafs reflects his search for direction after a challenging season and a demotion to the AHL.
