The relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs and David Kampf has gradually worsened over the past year and now appears to have reached a breaking point.
Kampf was left off the Maple Leafs’ opening night roster for the first time since the 2017-18 season, after not making the team out of training camp. He was subsequently assigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
According to league sources, David Kampf has been suspended without pay by the Leafs for refusing to report to the Marlies. This suspension means the team is not currently carrying the $1.25 million buried Cap Charge while he remains in the minors.
"The expectation is this is resolved soon (he reports back, Leafs have confirmed this, adding that it is part of the process for seeking an amicable resolution)."
The Leafs and Kampf are working toward a resolution after his suspension for declining to join the AHL affiliate.
