Manchester United’s young talent James Overy has earned a call-up to the Australia senior team for friendly matches against Venezuela and Colombia. The announcement marks another step in the teenager’s remarkable rise through the ranks.
Socceroos coach Tony Popovic selected 11 new players for the squad, giving Overy an opportunity to showcase his ability after his strong performances at the U20 World Cup.
Having joined United in the summer of 2024 on a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July, Overy turns 18 this weekend. He was previously invited by Ruben Amorim to train with the first team at Carrington before a Premier League game against Chelsea.
Soon after joining the Red Devils, Overy suffered an injury that kept him sidelined for eight months, but he eventually returned to action for the Under-18s in February, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News.
This season, Overy has been a regular feature in Darren Fletcher’s setup and has also appeared for the Under-21s in both Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,” said former Under-18s manager Adam Lawrence in an interview with MUTV.
James Overy’s call-up to Australia’s senior team highlights his rapid progress at Manchester United after overcoming injury and proving his talent on both youth and national stages.
