The PlayStation Portal, a handheld console that has seen little attention, is receiving cloud gaming capabilities. Sony hopes this update will enhance the device’s appeal.
The Steam Deck's success sparked a wave of interest in handheld gaming devices. Its appeal lies in the freedom to play almost anywhere—whether on a plane, train, or even in the bathroom.
By last summer, only 3% of PlayStation 5 owners purchased the Portal. This device depends on owning a PlayStation 5, as it streams games from the console rather than operating independently.
Sony recently announced that PlayStation Portal users can access cloud gaming, including streaming select digital PS5 games from their own library without needing to connect the console.
“PlayStation Portal owners can now use cloud gaming. This includes ‘select digital PS5 games from their own library’ and cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus — without the requirement of connecting to the console itself.”
However, this feature requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, the highest tier costing $17.99 monthly or $159.99 annually.
For those already subscribed, this update significantly expands the Portal’s functionality beyond being a simple streaming screen.
“If you’re already a subscriber, however, this is a great update that makes the PlayStation Portal more than a glorified screen.”
This enhancement may attract more users seeking portable PlayStation experiences without being tethered directly to their console.
Author's summary: PlayStation Portal gains cloud gaming support, but access requires a costly PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, enhancing the device’s usability for current subscribers.
