Shaun Murphy, former world champion and holder of Masters and British Open titles, narrowly escaped a major upset in the second round of the International Championship held in Nanjing, China. He clinched victory in a tense final frame against 14-year-old qualifier Wang Xinzhong.
The teenage qualifier had already attracted attention by defeating notable players such as women's world champion Bai Yulu and veteran Robbie Williams. Despite Yulu achieving the highest-ever break by a woman in a ranking event—a 145—Wang prevailed.
Murphy overcame the pressure with crucial breaks of 72 and 89, securing his spot in the last 32 where he will face Elliot Slessor.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Murphy said to World Snooker Tour. “Ronnie [O’Sullivan] was good at 14, as were many others.”
Murphy expressed great admiration for the young player and predicted a bright future for him in the sport.
