France: Government launches suspension procedure for Chinese online platform Shein

France Launches Suspension Procedure Against Shein

The French government has initiated a suspension procedure against the Chinese online retailer Shein, which recently opened its first physical clothing store in the BHV department store in Paris.

"On the instructions of the Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, the government is launching the suspension procedure against Shein for the time necessary for the platform to demonstrate to the public authorities that it complies with our laws and regulations," stated the French Ministry of Economy.

The ministry added that an evaluation of the case would be carried out within the next 48 hours. The decision follows strong criticism after the company displayed for sale inflatable dolls resembling minors, which were later withdrawn.

Several parliamentarians from different political groups are planning to submit a motion to the European Union urging France and Europe to adopt firmer measures against the platform.

Antoine Vermorel-Marques, a Republican deputy, reported that he had filed a complaint with the Paris prosecutor’s office after discovering weapons for sale on Shein’s website.

"Selling weapons is punishable by five years in prison and a €75,000 fine," the deputy wrote on X.

In recent days, Shein has faced heightened backlash in France due to these incidents and growing calls for stricter oversight of online platforms.
