This November, we observe Military Family Appreciation Month and Veterans Day, two important occasions to recognize the courage and sacrifice of Iowa’s military members and their families.
Veterans Day honors the dedication of the brave men and women who risk everything to protect our freedom and peace. Originally called Armistice Day, it began over a century ago to honor those who fought in World War I and has since evolved to recognize all veterans and current military service members.
The first Armistice Day was declared on November 11, 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson. He said:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the council of nations.”
The day was marked with parades, public ceremonies, and the suspension of business activities as a sign of respect.
I am proud to come from a family with several members who served their country with honor, including ancestors who fought in the Ohio Infantry during the Civil War, served in Cuba in the Spanish American War, and defended democracy during World War II.
Author's summary: Veterans Day honors the bravery and sacrifice of military members and their families, connecting past and present through remembrance and civic pride.
