Aurora City Council OKs winter warming center with changes from past years

Aurora City Council Approves Winter Warming Center with Changes

The city of Aurora’s temporary winter warming shelter will be different this year, with extended nights of operation, a new location, and a different organization managing it. The Aurora City Council approved a contract on Tuesday with Becoming Oswego Church to run the shelter for about $135,000.

New Operating Conditions

The shelter will open overnight when temperatures drop to 32 degrees or below for at least six hours, according to a draft contract. This is a change from previous years when the threshold was 15 degrees.

Filling a Critical Need

Nicole Mullins, Chief Community Services Officer, explained the importance of the warming shelter:

Aurora currently lacks a low barrier option for people to seek shelter this winter, so this warming shelter will fill that need.

She added that the shelter is intended only for those who cannot access Hesed House, the local homeless shelter, either due to full capacity or other reasons.

Summary

The new warming center offers expanded access and a lower temperature threshold, addressing gaps in shelter availability during winter in Aurora.
