This Year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Comes From Upstate New York

This holiday season, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree will shine in Manhattan, sourced from East Greenbush, New York. This native New York tree returns the tradition of using a tree from the Empire State, after last year’s tree came from Massachusetts.

The 75-foot-tall Norway spruce, with a diameter of 45 feet, will travel approximately 130 miles (209 kilometers) to arrive at the iconic plaza on November 8.

“As soon as I saw it, I knew it was perfect,” said Erik Pauze, Rockefeller Center’s head gardener. He added, “What I look for is a tree you’d want in your living room, but on a grander scale … it needs to make people smile the second they see it.”

Pauze has selected the city’s famous holiday tree for over 30 years, sourcing trees from up and down the East Coast, including New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. In the past decade, seven of the ten trees have come from New York State.

This year's winning tree came to Pauze by chance when a photo was shared with him through a Rockefeller Center security supervisor. The tree has grown for decades on the Russ family’s property upstate, and the family, longtime New Yorkers, is excited to share its festive spirit with the world.
