"Past Lives" by Jay Som ft. Hayley Williams - Northern Transmissions
Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She is set to release her new album Belong on November 7. Prior to the album's release, Jay Som shared the single "Past Lives," featuring Hayley Williams from Paramore.
The collaboration came about when the two artists met in Nashville to work on a song together alongside Steph Marziano. Williams’ soft harmonies on the sweeping track "Past Lives" enhance its wistful tone, capturing the feeling of drifting through low moments, gaining strength only to see it slip away.
The song stands out as a powerful piece, with its slowed midsection striking like an internal battle.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte says of the collaboration.
“She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The album Belong features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. Jay Som has also included guest vocalists on the record for the first time.
