Buckner Shines in Clemson Debut; Tigers Dominate Wildcats

The Clemson University men’s basketball team opened its 2025–26 season with a commanding 88–38 victory over New Hampshire on Monday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The 38 points allowed were the fewest in a season opener for Clemson since December 11, 1946, when the Tigers defeated Erskine 58–30.

Redshirt freshman Ace Buckner from Dallas, Texas, led the team in his collegiate debut, scoring 18 points along with three rebounds, two assists, and a blocked shot. Buckner surpassed the debut performance of his father, Greg Buckner, who tallied 10 points, nine assists, and five rebounds in his first Clemson game against Charleston Southern on November 29, 1994.

Buckner displayed high efficiency, shooting 6-for-7 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. He was supported by RJ Godfrey, who came close to his third career double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, and Jake Wahlin, who contributed 11 points and four rebounds. Jestin Porter and Carter Welling added depth, scoring eight and ten points respectively, with solid contributions in rebounds and assists.

Clemson closed the first half with a decisive 15–2 run in the final six minutes, entering halftime with a 43–16 advantage. Overall, 12 players saw playing time for Clemson, and 11 made it onto the scoreboard, showcasing the team’s depth and balanced attack.
