By Suleman Chitera, Chingola, Zambia – November 8, 2025: What began as a routine visit by President Hakainde Hichilema to Chingola District descended into chaos when parts of the crowd turned violent, sparking acts of arson, looting, and vandalism targeting both government and private property.
According to the Zambia Police Service, disturbances began around 14:50 at Chiwempala Market, where President Hichilema was addressing local residents. A faction of unruly individuals reportedly forced entry into shops and started looting goods.
When police attempted to restore calm, the mob grew increasingly aggressive, moving toward the area where the President was speaking.
“For security reasons, the Head of State was quickly and safely evacuated from the venue and escorted to Chikola Secondary School landing grounds,” the police statement read.
The violent group pursued the presidential convoy, throwing stones and other objects at government vehicles. Superintendent Lloyd Kanondo, 48, reported that a white Toyota Land Cruiser, registration ZP 2537 B, was overturned and later set on fire by the mob.
Police responded with ten warning shots in an effort to disperse the rioters, but tensions continued to mount. The total value of damaged public property is still under assessment.
The presidential visit to Chingola devolved into violent riots causing significant destruction, prompting rapid evacuation and ongoing police investigation.
