LSU interim head coach Frank Wilson made a bold move in his debut by benching senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and giving sophomore Michael Van Buren a chance to lead the offense against Alabama.
Midway through the third quarter of Saturday night’s matchup at Bryant–Denny Stadium, Wilson replaced Nussmeier with Van Buren. The switch came at a point when LSU was struggling to find rhythm against its long-time rival.
“As we discussed as a staff, we knew there could be opportunities in the quarterback run game,” Wilson said after the game. “(Alabama) would make it more difficult sitting in the pocket. We wanted to move (Van Buren) around and do some things. I thought he gave us a chance to do those things. That went into the thought.”
When Van Buren entered the field with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter, LSU trailed 17–6. He immediately led a scoring drive following a fumble recovery forced by linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. on Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Damian Ramos finished the drive with a field goal, narrowing the gap to 17–9 and keeping the Tigers within reach.
However, LSU failed to add more points afterward. The Alabama Crimson Tide, ranked No. 4, maintained their composure and closed out the game with a 20–9 victory, leaving LSU with a 5–4 record overall and 2–4 in the SEC.
Frank Wilson’s first major coaching decision for LSU showcased his willingness to adapt offensively, though it ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome Alabama’s control of the game.
