LSU made a quarterback change during the third quarter of their game against No. 4 Alabama, benching senior Garrett Nussmeier and inserting sophomore Michael Van Buren.
Van Buren entered with LSU trailing 17-6 and 6:26 remaining in the third quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium. This marked his first meaningful playing time this season with the game still competitive.
Nussmeier had been the starter, taking every offensive snap until this point. His stats against Alabama were 18 completions on 21 attempts for 121 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
On LSU’s opening drive of the second half, Nussmeier led the team into the red zone, but the Tigers were set back by a delay of game penalty on third and goal from the 8-yard line, followed by a timeout.
"Van Buren could play in specific situations against the Crimson Tide," said LSU interim coach Frank Wilson, though Nussmeier had handled all offensive snaps until Van Buren’s entry.
LSU's quarterback switch reflects a strategic adjustment as the game against Alabama progresses.
