The quake’s epicenter was located about 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) beneath the ocean surface. Authorities have issued a tsunami warning for the region’s eastern shoreline.
The Japan Meteorological Agency cautioned that waves up to 1 meter (3.28 feet) could reach coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture.
