Avelo Airlines is celebrating its fourth anniversary at Tweed-New Haven Airport while preparing to withdraw from Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks this January.
On Monday, the company released a statement highlighting four years of operations at the New Haven hub. Avelo began service at Tweed-New Haven on November 3, 2021, with the goal of providing affordable, reliable, and accessible flights to travelers.
“Avelo has flown more than 3.8 million customers and launched nearly 30,000 flights to and from New Haven since November 2021,” the airline reported.
The airline expanded into Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks in November 2024, adding both domestic and international routes. However, the operation proved unsustainable. Last month, Avelo announced plans to end service there in January, citing the high costs of maintaining operations.
“We could not cover the costs of operating at Bradley,” Avelo explained in its statement.
The decision has drawn criticism from local officials and residents who had hoped Avelo’s presence would strengthen the airport’s route network.
Even with the exit from Bradley, Avelo’s New Haven base continues to thrive, solidifying its presence in Connecticut’s aviation market and reflecting strong regional demand for low-cost air travel.
