The Cook Islands have officially qualified for the IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 after a commanding 58–6 victory over South Africa in Sunday’s RLWC26 qualifying match at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.
This win makes the Cook Islands the 14th nation to earn a place in the tournament, joining Australia, England, Fiji, France, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, and Wales among the competing men’s teams next season.
The Aitu team surged ahead in the second half, sealing the qualification with confidence. KL Iro, who represents the Cronulla Sharks in the National Rugby League, expressed his delight after the match.
“Going to the World Cup, it's massive for us,” said Iro. “We talked about it over the last four weeks. Really stoked to get this reward after tough games in Fiji and Papua New Guinea.”
His teammate Brendan Piakura credited team cohesion and preparation in Rarotonga, following their Pacific Bowl campaign, as key to their strong finish.
“I'm excited, exciting times,” said Piakura.
The Cook Islands’ decisive win over South Africa secures their place in the RLWC26, marking a major milestone for the team and their growing rugby legacy.
