Qualifiers Preview

South African coach Darryl Fisher acknowledges that Cook Islands are strong favorites for Sunday’s IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 qualifier at CommBank Stadium. However, he is encouraged by the talent present in the South African Rhinos squad.

Cook Islands and South Africa will compete for the final spot at the 2026 World Cup in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Cook Islands team boasts many stars from the NRL and Super League, including KL Iro, Brendan Piakura, and Marata Niukore.

In comparison, the Rhinos list players from state competitions in NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, and South Africa. This includes Niel Beukes, a former Storm and Cowboys triallist who will make his international debut after playing Super Rugby with the Pretoria-based Blue Bulls.

“The squad is looking pretty good, they have been training really well and they are in good shape,” Fisher said. “We are well aware of the level of opposition we are up against, but it is an opportunity for our players to play guys at that level. If they put their best foot forward and play to their capabilities, they will give themselves a chance. I certainly can’t ask any more of them in terms of their preparation and effort to get ready for the game. I am impressed by how they are looking and if they can manage the physical pressure.”

The match will be a significant test for South Africa as they challenge a team full of internationally experienced players.

Author’s summary: The Cook Islands enter the Rugby League World Cup qualifier as favorites, but South African coach Darryl Fisher is optimistic about his team's preparation and potential to compete against tough opposition.
