Roar striker intent on showing ‘quality’ against old club

Roar striker aims to prove his quality against former club

Brisbane Roar forward Justin Vidic insists he has nothing to prove to his old team, Newcastle Jets, when the two sides meet on Sunday. However, he remains confident that he will demonstrate his quality after being released by the Jets at the end of the previous season.

After scoring only once in 13 A-League appearances for Newcastle — mostly coming off the bench — the 21-year-old striker was not offered a contract extension when Mark Milligan took over coaching duties from Robbie Stanton. Facing uncertainty, Vidic accepted an opportunity to trial with Brisbane, which led to a two-year deal.

Vidic’s persistent work ethic and traditional forward style have fit well with the Roar’s direct and physical approach under coach Michael Valkanis. Now, with a secured position and renewed confidence, he looks forward to facing his former club.

“These things happen for a reason,” said Vidic before the upcoming clash at Sunshine Coast Stadium. “I’m sure I’ll show my quality. I don’t think I have anything to prove to them. They know what I’m capable of, and there are still people there I stay in touch with.”

Vidic has started in two of Brisbane’s opening three games this season and scored his first goal for the club in a 2–1 defeat to Wellington last month, marking a strong start to his tenure with the Roar.
