DANIEL Wilmering insists the Newcastle Jets will continue to play their style of football but acknowledges they must match the physicality of the Brisbane Roar on Sunday to secure three points at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
The Roar have built a reputation as the A-League's bully boys, known for their tough, aggressive play. They have managed two clean sheets in three rounds and are difficult to break down, a reflection of their coach Michael Valkanis' influence, one of the toughest centre-backs in A-League history.
"They are a very physical side and will be up for it. We have to earn the right to play. We have to match the intensity of any team. If you lose the 50-50s and you are not in the contest, it is hard to play."
The Jets experienced this firsthand in a pre-season friendly in Lismore, where they fell 3-1 to the Roar.
"It was a very physical and intense game. We want to play our brand of football. If there are 50-50s to be won, we have to win them."
Wilmering's determination underlines the Jets' focus on maintaining their approach while rising to the challenge posed by their tough opponents.
Author's summary: Newcastle Jets defender Daniel Wilmering emphasizes the need to match Brisbane Roar's physical intensity to succeed, while staying true to their own style of play.
