Carol and Ned Spieker have donated $25 million to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to enhance the West Building’s facilities for mothers and newborns. This major gift will support renovations at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, particularly upgrading the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services to improve patient privacy and family comfort.
On October 23, the hospital announced the generous contribution by the Bay Area philanthropists. Luanne Smedley, executive director of the Johnson Center, expressed gratitude, stating:
“[Carol and Ned Spieker’s] generosity helps turn our vision for a completely reimagined space into reality — to serve and support more families from our community and beyond.”
Both Carol and Ned Spieker served as fellows at Stanford’s Distinguished Careers Institute (Class of 2016). Their personal connection to the hospital runs deep, as their children and grandchildren were born there.
“We care deeply about helping growing families in our community get the best possible care. We feel fortunate that they are healthy and thriving, and we want to help ensure that future generations of moms and babies receive the support they need,”said the Spiekers in the hospital’s announcement.
The hospital delivers approximately 4,500 babies annually—almost a dozen each day—and about 70% of these are high-risk cases, according to Smedley.
The donation will enable the hospital to better meet the needs of these families by creating a more supportive environment for care.
Summary: A $25 million gift from Carol and Ned Spieker will fund key renovations at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, enhancing care for mothers and high-risk newborns through improved privacy and comfort.
