Nevada Senators Cross Party Lines to End Shutdown

The Senate took its first step toward reopening the government on Sunday, with a 60–40 procedural vote to advance a bipartisan compromise. The move came after moderate Democrats, including Nevada Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto, agreed to proceed despite lacking a guarantee to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Their decision frustrated many Democrats who had hoped to continue pressing for health care aid. The proposed measure will fund government operations and allow for a separate vote later on extending the ACA tax credits set to expire in January.

Catherine Cortez Masto, who had supported prior Republican-backed legislation to end the shutdown, joined Rosen in backing the motion, marking a rare moment of alignment between the two.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and most of his caucus voted against advancing the bill. Rosen had previously resisted similar efforts, saying Nevadans did not send her to Washington to “cave” to Republican demands, but the mounting costs of the historic shutdown appeared to shift her stance.
