On Sunday night after 6:00 p.m., San Pedro Town experienced a sudden power outage caused by a malfunctioning transformer near Ramon’s Village Resort. Residents reported hearing a sound resembling an explosion.
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) issued an official statement attributing the blackout to a hardware failure on the overhead section of the 34.5 kV sub-transmission line that supplies electricity to the island.
This transmission line connects San Pedro to the national grid using a combination of submarine, underground, and overhead infrastructure.
The situation was worsened by the fact that BEL’s San Pedro Gas Turbine, which normally serves as a backup power source, could not be activated since it depends on the same faulty transmission line.
Additionally, adverse weather conditions hindered the progress of restoration efforts.
BEL confirmed the outage was caused "by a hardware fault on the overhead portion of the 34.5 kV sub-transmission line that supplies power to the island."
Residents said they "heard what sounded like an explosion" before the blackout.
Summary: The power outage in San Pedro was triggered by a critical hardware failure on the main transmission line, complicated by backup system issues and bad weather delaying repairs.
