VANCOUVER — Gavin Brindley scored just 68 seconds into overtime, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night.
Vancouver’s Jake DeBrusk forced the extra frame when he redirected a Brock Boeser pass on a power play with 3:01 left in regulation.
Artturi Lehkonen struck twice in the third period, including one goal with the man advantage. Nathan MacKinnon opened the game strong, netting two quick goals in under 90 seconds during the first period, one coming on the power play. He also recorded three assists for a total of five points.
Both clubs had played the night before — Vancouver beat Columbus 4-3, while Colorado routed Edmonton 9-1. Goaltender Kevin Lankinen stopped 27 shots for Vancouver in his second straight start. Mackenzie Blackwood turned aside 29 attempts for the Avalanche.
“Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko did not dress for the second consecutive game after missing Friday’s practice.”
The Avalanche edged Vancouver in a thrilling overtime win, capped by Brindley’s quick strike and MacKinnon’s dominant five-point night.
