Leanne Castley’s leadership journey began with promise but ended in disappointment. Known earlier as a capable country music singer with a raw yet tender voice, she once charmed audiences with her passion for cars, motorbikes, and engines.
After the Canberra Liberals lost their seventh consecutive election in October last year, Castley was chosen as leader, succeeding Elizabeth Lee. The party appeared ready for renewal, with Castley and deputy Jeremy Hanson forming the new front.
"I am leader through to 2028," she promised.
At first, optimism surrounded her leadership — it felt like a fresh start. But barely three years short of her promised term, both Castley and Hanson have stepped down. The bright start faded quickly, reminiscent of one of her own country lyrics about rainclouds overshadowing the sunshine.
Even from the outset, hints of internal strain were visible. Immediately after the election loss, Castley seemed to support Elizabeth Lee before abruptly withdrawing her backing — a move that did little to unite her colleagues.
Leanne Castley’s move from country stages to political leadership began with optimism yet dissolved into division and early resignation, echoing the melancholy of her own songs.
