During her historic career, the former Speaker of the House worked with many politicians, including Democrats and Republicans from Rhode Island. Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that she will not seek reelection next year, concluding a career that made her one of the most influential political leaders in modern American history. She also maintained strong ties to Rhode Island.
In 2022, after Pelosi stepped down as the Democratic leader in the House, current and former members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation shared their memories of her. Here are some of their stories along with additional reflections from those who know her well in the Ocean State.
Patrick Kennedy, who represented Rhode Island’s 1st District from 1995 to 2011, was in the House when Pelosi became the first female Speaker in 2007. He described Pelosi as fiercely loyal to her colleagues, which earned their steadfast support when she needed votes.
Kennedy recalled a moment during the Affordable Care Act vote when he was in rehab. Pelosi needed his vote so urgently that she personally contacted his doctor to get permission to bring him to the Capitol for four hours. The doctor agreed, and Pelosi arranged transportation for Kennedy. After the vote, she hugged him and said,
“OK, honey, now you can go back to treatment.”
Nancy Pelosi’s loyalty and determination earned her deep respect among Rhode Island politicians, reflecting her impactful and personal leadership style.
