Army to Expand Role in Homeland Defense
The Army Space and Missile Defense Command is preparing to expand its role in defending the homeland as threats evolve and grow.
Lt. Sean Gainey, commander of Army Space and Missile Defense Command, stated that the Army will assume a broader mission in defending the U.S. homeland, addressing a wider variety of threats, including drones, cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons.
- The Army currently manages command-and-control missions for the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system through its 100th Missile Defense Brigade.
- The GMD system is designed to defend the homeland from intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) from North Korea and Iran.
- The system consists of 44 interceptors located at Fort Greeley, Alaska, and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
The Army will soon address a much wider variety of threats, from drones to cruise missiles to hypersonic weapons.
