Online sales are transforming the market for Native artists

Online Sales and Native Artists

Online sales are transforming the market for Native artists, but counterfeits may pose a threat to their work.

Marlo Kiyite's introduction to art began when she was 19 and pregnant, living with her cousin in Gallup, New Mexico. Her cousin, a well-known carver of Zuni Pueblo fetishes, suggested Kiyite try carving.

"I said, 'Hey, anything at this point,'" Kiyite remembered. "So I started carving."

Kiyite learned to cut, clean, and decorate the figures, which the Zuni believe carry the spirit of the animals they represent, offering protection and strength. Over 40 years, Kiyite and her husband, Fitz, developed a unique style of stone fetishes.

Author's note: Native artists face challenges in online sales.
