How and where to safely spot Island salmon coming home to spawn

Salmon Spotting Season on Vancouver Island

Salmon spotting season is underway across Vancouver Island, with the peak expected to hit later this month. Pacific salmon are returning home to rivers and streams after travelling thousands of kilometres.

Salmon have already been spotted in Goldstream Provincial Park and in the Puntledge and Quinsam rivers, according to the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

"(This) is turning out to be a great year to spot salmon,"

said Michael Meneer, foundation president and CEO. He attributes this to favourable ocean conditions and significant conservation work by First Nations, streamkeepers, and grassroots groups across B.C.

"We hope people take the opportunity to get outdoors and visit local streams to witness this incredible migration."

Author's summary: Salmon return to Vancouver Island to spawn.
