The Grand Junction Police Department has unveiled its new K9 team, consisting of Loki and Brissa, along with their handlers, Cory Swetman and Cody Lopez.
According to Matt Smith, Public Safety Chief,
The two dogs are drug detection dogs and they're tracking dogs. So they're going to help us with getting some dangerous drugs off the street. He also mentioned that they will be useful in cases such as
a lost child, if we have somebody who's maybe wandered away, who's got some issues with dementia and so forth, and then tracking suspects.
Loki and Brissa's induction into the force was made possible by a community donation from Ann Raabe and Paul DiMarchi, who participated in GJPD's Community Police Academy. Raabe expressed her impression, stating
We were both so impressed.
The new K9 team underwent a 9-week training program over the summer.
