Anchorage Prepares for Influx of Western Alaska Evacuees

Anchorage officials are expanding shelter capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 displaced residents by week's end following former Typhoon Halong.

As of Wednesday, 262 evacuees had arrived in Anchorage, with an additional 650 expected by Thursday, and a possible third wave could bring the total to approximately 2,000 by Friday.

"We're focused on ensuring that everyone who comes here, everyone who's evacuated to Anchorage has a safe place to be and has access to the services they need,"

said Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. The city has expanded its emergency shelter operations beyond the initial Alaska Airlines Center location.

Mayor LaFrance and city officials are working to ensure all evacuees have a safe place to stay and access to necessary services.
