Chicago Youth Explore Science with Space Explorers

Since 1991, the University of Chicago's Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics has connected Chicago Public Schools students with world-class astronomers and physicists.

The Space Explorers program, run by the Kavli Institute, initially focused on introducing high school students to cosmology and its related research. Over time, it has expanded to cover various areas of science, allowing students to explore different scientific interests.

Students participating in the program engage in hands-on challenges, such as designing model rockets, boats, and cars, and the classic egg drop experiment. These activities help students develop open-ended problem-solving skills as they tweak their designs week after week.

The program's essence is to provide students with a unique learning experience, allowing them to explore science in a fun and interactive way.
