5 days and the First Amendment's future: CSU reinstates free speech policy following weeklong protests

Colorado State University (CSU) has reinstated its free speech policy after a week of protests. The policy, which allowed for expression on campus, including chalking on the Lory Student Center Plaza, had been rescinded for two months without the knowledge of the university community.

CSU senior Amber Wright was one of the students who protested the policy change. On October 7, she sat on the Lory Student Center Plaza, surrounded by puddles of water and colorful smears, and drew arrows pointing to the puddles with the words "RIP Free Speech" in bright orange.

Chalking on the plaza has long been an outlet for free speech and expression at the university. The plaza is not the only free speech zone on campus, but it is where chalking, tabling, debating, and messaging are most commonly found.
