Montrose County Proposes Ordinance to Halt Non-Native Species
A proposed ordinance in Montrose County aims to prevent the introduction of non-native species, including the Canadian gray wolf.
The ordinance, No. 2025-01, would prohibit the introduction, support, or habitat establishment of non-native animal species, with fines of up to $1,000 per day for bringing a wolf to the county.
“We're introducing an apex predator into our communities and (into) an environment that literally can endanger endangered species that are federally protected,”
said Montrose County Commissioner Scott Mijares. The ordinance defines non-native species as those not historically present in the county in the past 100 years, including the Canadian Gray Wolf (Canis lupus).
