A large stretch of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton will be closed due to a Marine Corps live-fire event, part of its 250th birthday celebration.
The closure, which will be in effect from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, was announced by the California Highway Patrol, citing "extreme life safety risk and distraction to drivers" from the event.
Due to an event at Camp Pendleton today, October 18th, Interstate 5 will be closed from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
This closure comes despite the Marine Corps' initial statement that no freeway closure would be necessary.
