A 747 cargo freighter skidded off the runway into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport, killing two airport staff and injuring four crew.
The accident occurred when the Boeing 747 freighter, operated by Turkish carrier ACT Airlines, attempted to land on the airport’s north runway at around 3:50 a.m. local time. The aircraft had arrived from Dubai and skidded off course, breaking in two on impact.
“Unfortunately, an airport security patrol car was there at that time,” said Steven Yiu, Executive Director of Airport Operations at HKIA. “The aircraft collided with the patrol car and pushed the car into the sea.
The incident has prompted a major investigation into its cause. Two airport security personnel were killed after the aircraft collided with their patrol vehicle on the runway.
