Chronic Hand Eczema Prevalence in the U.S.

A recent study presented at the 2025 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference in Las Vegas found that 1 in 10 U.S. adults have physician-diagnosed chronic hand eczema.

In comparison, a similar study in Canada and Europe showed a prevalence of 5%.

Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is defined as hand eczema lasting more than three months or relapsing twice or more within a year.

“These highly powered survey results provide compelling evidence that chronic hand eczema (or CHE) is a common skin disease in the United States,”

said Raj Chovatiya, M.D., Ph.D., lead investigator of the CHECK study.

The CHECK study, conducted by LEO Pharma, is the first to quantify the prevalence of chronic hand eczema.

Author summary: Chronic hand eczema affects 1 in 10 U.S. adults.
